Marine Deputy – Seasonal (Memorial Day to Labor Day)
Job Summary
Under limited supervision, a Marine Deputy is responsible for enforcing the state laws outlined in the Marine Safety Act. Marine Deputies respond to citizen complaints, involving reckless operation, trespassing, property damage, and boating accidents. Deputies also respond to emergency situations on all the lakes and rivers in Cheboygan County and assist with search and rescue operations.
High School graduate or equivalent
Currently in a college-law enforcement related study or interested in attending a higher learning program related to law enforcement
Not less than 18 years of age
Are able to work in the United states
Possess a valid driver’s license
Have no prior felony convictions
Any misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for eligibility
Clean driving record-citations will be reviewed on a case-by case basis for eligibility
Pass a drug test, checking for the presence of illicit controlled substances
Possess good moral character.
To treat all with respect
Pass a department-conducted background investigation
Pass a fingerprint check
Conduct an interview with the Recreational Division Sergeant
Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and typing skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to communicate with the public, other Sheriff Department employees and other County employees
Ability to learn and safely operate and maintain a marine patrol boat and jet ski.
Ability to drive a police vehicle towing a trailer, boat or jet ski if needed
Ability to run and do some lifting, bending, climbing, reaching, overhead pushing and pulling
Ability to attend training any day of the week
Ability to work ordered overtime and flexible schedules to include evenings, weekends and holidays
Able to conduct vessel stops and take appropriate corrective measures regarding state law and local ordinances which includes citations under the Marine Safety Act
