RECYCLING

PARTICIPATING TOWNSHIPS

Aloha, Beaugrand, Burt, City of Cheboygan, Ellis, Hebron, Inverness, Koehler, Mentor, Mullett, Munro, Tuscarora, Walker and Waverly.

Non-participating township residents can utilize the Recycling & Hazardous Waste Program by purchasing an annual permit at the Cheboygan County Treasurer Office for $40.

COMMERCIAL & BUSINESS RECYCLING

Commercial and business entities can apply to use the recycling program through the fairground office. The attached application form should be submitted by email to Recycling@CheboyganCounty.net or mailed to the Recycling Office at PO Box 70, Cheboygan, MI 49721.

  1. City of Cheboygan: behind County Building at 870 S. Main St.
  2. Indian River: on Martha Street west of Straits Highway
  3. Aloha Township Hall: 3012 North M-33
  4. Benton Township Hall: 5012 Orchard Beach Rd., Alverno
    This facility is for Benton Township residents only.
  5. East Burt Township Transfer Station open 9-5 Sat. and 9-1 Mon.
    This facility is on Crump Rd. north of Mullett-Burt Rd.
  6. Waverly Township Hall: 11133 Twin School Rd.
  7. West Burt Township Transfer Station: on Indian Rd.
  8. Waverly Township: 7021 Montgomery Rd.

 

TYPES OF CONTAINERS AT DROP-OFF SITES:

BINS MARKED PAPER, BOXES & BAGS are for paper, magazines, catalogs, books, newspapers, paper bags, cardboard – please flatten boxes. No need to remove staples, tape or plastic windows from envelopes. Please package shredded paper in a transparent bag to avoid a messy transport. This bin is for stretchy plastic bags, too. NO Styrofoam or crunchy plastic.

BINS MARKED MIXED CONTAINERS are for rinsed glass, metal and hard plastic containers, lids. You don’t need to remove any labels. Only containers up to 2 gallon size are recycled through our program at this time. NO other items of these materials are taken, such as light bulbs, dishes or toys.

 

 HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION

Please read carefully! Our HHW program changed in the Spring of 2022.

We ONLY accept COMPUTERS, DESKTOP PRINTERS, TELEVISIONS AND NON-LATEX PAINTS, STAINS, VARNISHES.
Collection times are:

May through October: Every Wednesday from Noon to 3:00 pm
November through April: First Wednesday of each month Noon to 3:00 pm

WE DO NOT ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING ITEMS.  We may announce and conduct special collection event dates for these items, which are banned from household trash disposal:
Aerosol cans (per EGLE, empty cans with “no audible liquid” are NOT hazardous)
*Antifreeze
Automotive fluids (some local automotive shops accept used motor oil daily)
*Batteries (all types are dangerous – please tape ends to prevent fire)
Flammables
*Fluorescent bulbs
Herbicides
*Pesticides
Pool chemicals
Solvent-based adhesives, caulks, sealers or tar
Solvent-based strippers for dissolving paint, grease or resin
Thermostats/thermometers (pre-2008 and others may contain mercury)
Other (please call us at 231-627-7051 to discuss a proper disposal method)

NO TIRES (local tire shops may accept these for a fee)

NO EXPLOSIVES, AMMUNITION, OR RADIOACTIVE ITEMS

*Items marked with an asterisk are accepted for free from Cheboygan residents daily (except Sundays) at the Emmet County Drop-Off Center in Harbor Springs. Call to confirm their current policies at 231-348-0640. Items without an asterisk are also only accepted at their special collection events.
